Do you offer one way rentals?
Yes, vehicles may be hired one–way between our locations (Christchurch & Auckland). Please note a minimum hire period and/or one–way fee may apply over the high season.
What costs are included in the rates quoted on your website?
NZ Backpacker Rental rates include GST (tax), unlimited kilometers on all hires, standard insurance and free 24hr roadside assistance.
What is the minimum age to hire a vehicle?
The minimum age is 21 years to hire a car from NZ Backpacker Rentals provided you have a full and valid driver’s license.
What happens if my vehicle breaks down?
In the unlikely event of your vehicle breaking down, NZ Backpacker Rentals will organise to have it repaired. If this cannot be done within a reasonable time frame a replacement vehicle will be delivered to you within 24hrs depending on vehicle availability.
Can you guarantee an automatic or manual vehicle?
Different classes of cars have different transmission options and you may request your preference, however due to vehicle availability we cannot guarantee your choice.
Can I leave a vehicle in Picton or Wellington and pick up another one on the other side to avoid taking a vehicle across on the ferry?
No, this is not possible. However, NZ Backpacker Rentals offer very competitive ferry rates for their clients and we are more than happy to arrange tickets for you.
Can I pick-up or drop–off a vehicle after hours?
Yes, however there will be a small charge if you wish to pick up or return a vehicle after hours.
What happens if I wish to return my car early?
Should you wish to return your vehicle earlier than expected there will be no refund on your hire. If you have to return home for emergency reasons, your personal travel insurance should cover this.
Can I extend my hire period?
Yes, you can call our reservations team to request an extension to your hire period and subject to vehicle availability and authorisation, you will be charged the same daily rate as your original booking. If the vehicle is not available for the extended hire it must be returned to the correct location on the correct date. Failure to do so may result in a fee of up to NZ$500.
What are my payment options?
NZ Backpacker Rentals accept Visa, MasterCard and cash. We do not accept cash bonds, American Express or Diners Card. NZ Backpacker Rentals do require a deposit, the balance of the hire charges are paid at the commencement of hire.
